Partnering to Connect Language Development and Virginia History
Project Momentum partnered with the Virginia Department of Education to develop curriculum overlays aligned to Virginia History standards for Grade 11. These resources help educators plan for the language multilingual learners need to engage with grade-level content, while keeping content learning at the center of instruction.
Virginia History Curriculum Overlays
A curriculum overlay is a planning tool that highlights the language demands of a unit and provides strategies to support multilingual learners. Rather than treating language development as an “add-on,” overlays help educators intentionally integrate language development into content instruction.

Although these overlays were designed for Minnesota standards, the planning process and instructional strategies can be adapted to align with standards in other states.
